Survivors of TOV felicitated as a part of therapeutic intervention at Silchar, Assam
On the International Human Rights Day on 10 December, 2011 Barak Human Rights Protection Committee (BHRPC) conducted a programme to felicitate the survivors of torture and organized violence (TOV) at Banga Bhawan, Silchar (Assam) as a part of the therapeutic intervention. The felicitation programme was a joint event with a public discussion on the human rights situation in Barak valley and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights conducted to observe the International Human Rights Day. 14 survivors were ceremonially honored by the eminent persons of the valley. BHRPC observed the world human rights day in a unique way
Barak Human Rights Protection Committee (BHRPC observed the world human rights day on 10 December, 2011 in Silchar, Assam in a new way by felicitating survivors of human rights violations and reading out their testimonies in public. There was also a public discussion on the situation of human rights in Barak valley seen in lights with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Eminent public intellectuals of Silchar took part in the discussion along with senior members of BHRPC. (Read more)
People fast for repeal of AFSPA at Silchar, Assam
Hundreds of people gathered in front of the district headquarters at Silchar, Assam on 5 November, 2011 and demonstrated peacefully while observing symbolic fast for the day from 9am to 5pm in solidarity with the nationwide Save Democracy Repeal AFSPA campaign and to mark 11th year of epic fast by Irom Sharmila Chanu in demand of repeal of the draconian law called the Armed Forces (Special Power) Act, 1958. The event was organized by Barak Human Rights Protection Committee (BHRPC), Human Rights Organisation, Cachar, (HRO). Apart from the members of some other social organizations such as Kishan Bikash Samiti, Banskandi, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, Assam Majuri Shramik Union, COPE and others many lawyers, journalists, teachers, artists and cultural activists also participated.
